Tehtävä Summary

Assistant, Associate or Full Professor in Ship Hydrodynamics (tenure track) at the Department of Energy and Mechanical Engineering, Aalto University. The role leads the ship hydrodynamics field, contributing to cutting‑edge research, teaching, and service.

Responsibilities

• Advance research on calm‑water resistance, hydrodynamic loads, motions, and added resistance using targeted experiments, full‑scale operational data, and both high‑fidelity and reduced‑order models.
• Build a dedicated research team, secure funding from institutions such as the Research Council of Suomi, Business Suomi, and Horizon Europe, and foster applied and fundamental studies.
• Teach marine hydrostatics and hydrodynamics, linking theory with model‑ and full‑scale experiments and numerical methods for seakeeping, wave loads, and added resistance; supervise undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students.
• Commit to the Aalto Ice and Wave Tank, using the facility for advanced research and teaching, and contribute to its further development.
• Promote collaboration with industry, authorities, and international partners to strengthen the hydrodynamics ecosystem of Aalto University.
• Develop and update curricula, embedding themes of climate adaptation, decarbonisation, and sustainable ship design.
• Engage in university service and contribute to the inclusion of diversity, equity, and inclusion in all activities.

Qualifications

• Hold a D.Sc. or Ph.D. and a successful postdoctoral or equivalent research or industrial track record.
• Expertise in at least one of: loads and seakeeping, wave‑ship/structure interaction, free‑surface hydrodynamics, or classical hydrodynamics with modern computational and data‑driven approaches.
• Demonstrated original contributions through publications, with clear impact on the field.
• Vision for pedagogical excellence, including inclusive teaching and the ability to operate with diverse students and colleagues.
• Strong collaboration, communication, and strategic insight, with experience in securing and managing research resources.
